FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

Gotham Concerts is honored to announce the 2014 Normandy Festival, commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Normandy landings.  We are privileged to present a program that will honor the heroes of World War II, the Allied "Band of Brothers" who gave so selflessly to secure a better world.

The centerpiece of the program is the Fauré Requiem, which will be performed by the Normandy Festival Chorus, the London International Orchestra of Academia and professional soloists. The concerts will take place in the gothic splendor of the Cathédrale de Notre Dame in Rouen (whose façade was famously painted at various times of day by Claude Monet, and where, as a boy chorister, the young Maurice Duruflé first encountered the mighty pipe organ and the mellifluous Gregorian chant which became the hallmarks of his work as a mature composer), and with the majestic Cavaillé-Coll organ at L'Eglise de la Madeleine in Paris, where Gabriel Fauré was the organist and where his Requiem was premiered in 1888.

In addition to a musical experience of ennobling integrity, festival participants will be afforded a comprehensive exploration of the extraordinary history, culture and cuisine of the Normandy region and of Paris.
